Page 4-A THE PILOT—Southern Pines, North Carolina Ceremony Slated Monday For Cum Laude Society O’Neal Day School has applied for and been granted a chapter of the Cum Laude Society, a national organization based on the precepts of Phi Beta Kappa and dedicated to academic excellence in high school. Installation ceremonies will take place at the Day School on Monday, May 18. Cum Laude Society Regent, Emmett Wright, Jr. from the Woodberry Forrest School will conduct the ceremony. Mrs. Alice Litwinchuk, Middle School Director at Charlotte Country Day School will be the guest speaker and a buffet luncheon will be served to inductees and their parents by the O’Neal Mothers’ Association. To be selected to membership in the society, a student must demonstrate superiority in scholarship in the college preparatory curriculum in accordance with the philosophy and policies governing their individual school. Dr. Charles Lowry has been elected president of the O’Neal Chapter and Headmaster Robert Haarlow will serve as secretary. Charter members will include: Sally LeFever, faculty; Steve Dummit, Dickie Joyner, Joan Phillips and Cindy Wallace, Class of 1977; Bobby Becker and Robert VanderVoort, Class of 1978; Mary Sue Faulkner, Lynne Joyner, Jody Wallace and Nancy Lillard, Class of 1979; Bucky Adams, Ron Glover, Jamey Staub and Jane Thompson, Class of 1980. On Sunday, April 26, of this year, approximately 200 persons kept the vow to return and enjoy, reminisce, renew acquaintances and have a luncheon at the Jackson Springs Community Center. The clan was called to order by Mrs. Carolyn Thomas (Bill) Men of Aberdeen who.^extended a welcome to all in attendance. Mrs. Men expressed ccmdolenrp to the family of B.W. Walker, (member of ^e clan) from High Point whose death occurred on Saturday. A moment of silent prayer was made in their behalf. Invocation was given by William K. (Bill) Allen of Aberdeen. A period of music was enjoyed with Warren and Jeff Davis of Carthage on the violin and guitar. Messrs. Davis are great- grandsons of John Calvin and Elizabeth Covington Thomas, and sons of the late Mrs. Flossie Bryant Davis. Mrs. Barbara Carter (Harris) Blake of Pinehurst did the honors for three granddaughters 80 years of age and above who were presented flowers. Mrs. Maggie Bennett Blue, 97, is at Montgomery Nursing Home and Hair-Fashion Show Slated At see May 19 Students in the Cosmetology Department of Sandhills Com munity College will ivesent a spring-summer hair and fashion ^w on May 19 at the college. The show get under way at 7:30 p.m. in the Student Hall and will open to the public free (rf diarge. The latest in hair styles and clothes will be featured in the show. There will be 24 models showing different styles. Mrs. Darlene Fisher, director of the program, said there will be 12 students participating in the show also. The students will create the hair styles by the 24 mo^ls. Severeral skits will be included in the show by students and models. One skit will feature an impersonation of Dolly Parton wide another will, imitate the television character “Fred Sanford.’’ During the show’s in termission, refreshments will be served SLIMNASnCS CLASS The Mowe County Recreation Department announces that a noon4ime slinuiastics classes will be held at Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Aber deen beginning on Monday, May 18 at 12 noon. The class will meet each Monday and Wednesday for five weeks, making a total of 10 classes, A fee of $10 will be charged. The instructor for the class will be Carol Pate, who presently teaches slimnastics all around Moore County. The classes will involve stretcldng exercising and aerobic dancing. Her daughter, Mrs. Mary Jane Harris of Jackson Springs, accepted the flowers in her mother’s behalf. Mrs. Ada Bennett of Rockingham and Mrs. Elizabeth C. Thomas of Jackson Springs were present to accept their flowers. Another cousin, Mrs. Fleta Thomas (Edgar) Brewer of Candor who will be 80 in a few days, was recognized. Mrs. Anna Belle Blue (Clinton) Campbell of Carthage presented a memorial to those departed. It was noted that 24 of the clan are no longer with us since the reunion in 1979. Mrs. Annie Thomas Maynard, accompanied by her daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Dr. Boyd of Atlanta, Georgia was presented a needlepoint picture with the inscription “Thomas Reunion, April 26, 1981’’ for having traveled the greatest distance to attend. Mel McKenzie received the gift for the youngest person in attendance. Mrs. Elizabeth C. Thomas recalled incidents of interest and musings concerning history and activities of the generations of John Calvin and Elizabeth Covington Thomas. Mrs. Willie (Claude) Thomas of Jackson springs, Mrs. Gayle Thomas (L.D.) Shelton of Ashley Heights, and Mrs. Dayle Thomas (harry) Pusser of Eagle Springs presided at the register. The president expressed appreciation to the officers and planning committee for cooperation and capable assistance in making the 1981 reunion the grand success that it was. Officers for 1983 reunion were named as follows: Glenn Patterson, President and Mrs. Eva (Glenn) Patterson, Secretary, assisted by the planning committee composed of: Henry Davis, Dicy Kennedy, Fleta Brewer, Claude Thomas, Barbara Blake, Enuna Blake, Herman Bennett, Lena Cox Willard, Floyd Thqmas and Frank Campbell. Children of John Calvin and Elizabeth Covington Thomas are listed with spouse: Anna Belle Thomas Stewart and John K.
